The Apple Eaters Series

This series of 12 paintings — six shown here — revisits the ancient theme of the fall of man — a story that may, or may not, have had much to do with an apple. This symbol appears in each work, shown at various stages of being consumed by Eve, Adam, or the long lineage of their flawed descendants.
Through expressive, often caricature-like figures, the paintings trace history and a centuries-long descent into ego, fear, conflict, greed, moral decay, and excess, each scene unfolding around the notion of 'forbidden' acts.
Rendered in bold primary colours and dynamic brushstrokes, these works expose the raw 'earthlings nature' — cutting straight to the heart of the matter, confronting viewers with honest reflections of their own humanity.

The 'Over de Berg' Series

This historical series of paintings captures the early movements of Dutch settlers fleeing British colonial rule in the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1846, as they crossed the coastal mountains toward the interior of South Africa in what would later be called Die Groot Trek.
On the high ground in the background, young men carrying snaphane — old front-loading rifles — gesture to encourage women to follow them 'Over de Berg' (Over the Mountain) as if to say, “Don’t worry, all shall be fine...”
Unlike the often serious and stoic portrayals of 'die Voortrekkers', these works show Dutch youth in playful, excited fashion — almost as if celebrating, in advance, the birth of a new nation.
Rendered using a layering technique inspired by the old masters, the paintings build depth and texture, creating a luminous interplay of light and color that gives the scenes both vitality and a sense of timelessness.
